JIM THORPE, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty eastern Pennsylvania deputy sheriff took another off-duty officer hostage at gunpoint, then fatally shot himself.
State Police Cpl. Shawn Noonan said Saturday that investigators are trying to figure out what motivated Carbon County Deputy Sheriff David Midas and says they're looking to see if there were signs of mental illness.
Police say the 33-year-old Midas went to the Lansford police station Friday night where he was a part-time officer. Investigators say he took ammunition and an unmarked police car and drove to the home of another off-duty officer and took him hostage.
Midas then drove to nearby Jim Thorpe. A struggle began and Midas shot himself in the head. He died early Saturday at a hospital.
Noonan had no information about the second officer's condition.
