KUSA- Out of the 2,167 overall participants in the 2013 Ironman the winner and runner-up are both from Boulder and happen to be friends.
Although Mirinda Carfrae trailed behind Rachel Joyce throughout both the swimming and biking leg, Carfrae managed to pass Joyce during the marathon and win gold.
Both triathletes managed to complete the race in under 9 hours. Carfrae came in at 8 hours, 52 minutes and 14 seconds, while Joyce finished at 8 hours, 57 minutes and 28 seconds.
Joyce has participated in a total of 13 races in the past and Carfrae in 8.
By the looks of it, neither plans on stopping anytime soon. Carfrae heads to her next competition Wednesday in Florida. Joyce will be taking part in an Ironman in Mexico come December.
