FREDERICK - A 3-year-old Frederick boy is dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Police are still investigating, but say it's a "possibility" the child could have shot himself.
Frederick Police Chief Gary Barbour told 9NEWS the mom called 911 before 10 a.m. Monday morning. She told the operator she believed her child had fallen and struck his head on the bedside table.
"Near the child was a handgun," Barbour said. "It also appeared with a little bit of inspection the handgun had been fired."
The child was taken to the hospital. Police later sent information that he had died. The coroner will determine the official cause. Police are not releasing the name of the victim, to make sure everyone in the family is properly notified first.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist the small police department in this investigation. It is not unusual for the CBI to help departments big and small.
Police said the boy was found in the parent's upstairs bedroom. The bullet, police said, ricocheted off the wall and found in the bed.
"It was a very severe trauma to the skull that's been described to me as producing a lot of blood. So, the injury was not very clear to the officers who observed it," Barbour said.
No one has been charged or taken into custody. Police chief said investigators found a registered handgun in the home. The investigation is on-going.
