Boppy, now an international company, began with the simplest of ideas. Susan Brown, a young Colorado mother, was asked by her daughter's day care center to bring in a pillow to prop up infants who couldn't yet sit up on their own. In one night, she designed a C-shaped rounded pillow ideally suited to this task.
Over the past two decades the company has grown, expanding its offerings to include everything from play gyms to body-length pillows for expectant mothers. The original Boppy pillow still remains very popular with parents of newborns. In fact, the company has been voted as the #1 baby product for a record 8 years by the readers of American Baby Magazine.
The company's success was noticed by the Artsana Group, the Italian company behind Chicco branded infant products. The company bought Boppy in June 2008.
On Friday, 9NEWS Anchor Gregg Moss visited the company's headquarters, which remain in Golden, and got to see the research and development work done here in Colorado.
Ergonomic studies have found the Boppy allows for more comfortable feeding for parents. The pillows can also help support the baby while it's learning to sit up, so it can strengthen their abdominal muscles. While the product can be used for feeding, play and sitting, they are not intended for sleeping babies.
