June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness day. The day is meant to serve as a reminder to the different types of abuse that occur. There is physical, emotional and financial abuse, which typical comes from another person, but there is also self-neglect, which is when someone who is elderly or handicapped is unable to care for themselves.

Susan Adamczyk is with the Arapahoe County Human Services Department and she explained what you should do if you suspect a family member or neighbor is suffering from abuse or neglect.

"I suggest you call the county department of human services for wherever the person they are concerned about lives and ask to speak to adult protection," Adamcyzk said. "They can always call us and tell us what their concerns are, what they are seeing."

"We can either investigate and try to assist the person to stop the abuse and neglect from continuing, or we can tell the neighbor here are some things you might want to look for or here are some ideas of community resources," she said.
