DOUGLAS COUNTY - Now that the snow and freezing weather has moved out, it may be time for some December fresh air and exercise. One good option is the Dawson Butte Ranch Open Space Trail.

The trail is a 5-mile loop trail located near Larkspur that features beautiful vistas and terrain that is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.

The trail is popular with both hikers and horseback riders. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

The trail travels through mostly forested areas with open meadows and beautiful views of the Front Range mountains. Please note there is no access to the top of the butte so as not to disturb the wildlife there.

How to get there:

From Interstate 25, take the Plum Creek Parkway exit west and head south five miles on the frontage road; turn right/west at Tomah Road; follow 1.5 miles to the Dawson Butte Ranch entrance on the right.
