The Mt. Sneffels Wilderness Area is the most beautiful mountain range I’ve seen in Colorado. It’s located south of Ridgeway, CO heading toward Telluride. I had a chance to see the range on a picture perfect day. I parked in a lot and took in the sights for about a half an hour. (Kevin Torres/9NEWS)
Box Canyon Falls is located in Ouray, CO. It’s a popular spot for ice-climbers. Box Canyon used to be a mining community, now it’s a recreational area. I visited Box Canyon Falls in March 2012. The canyon was coated in a thick layer of ice and dozens of climbers were knifing their way up it. (Kevin Torres/9NEWS)
Ouray is considered the ice-climbing capitol of Colorado since it has a homemade ice park.
The park has 14 climbing areas, ranging from beginner to experienced.
"It's a lot of fun. It can be difficult, but it's definitely fun!" said Ty Kelly, a climber.
Kelly and his friends were visiting from out of state. Some of them had never tried ice-climbing before and found it rather difficult.
"It takes some of us 25 minutes to get up the wall, whereas it takes others about five minutes," Kelly said.
The climbers are attached to a sling and harness, which prevents them from falling off the ice. With picks in each hand, the climbers break through the ice and pull themselves up it. They also use special boots which allows them to dig in to the ice. Kelly says it's a great upper body work out and you usually feel drained by the time you reach the top.
9NEWS Reporter Kevin Torres traveled to Ouray for this story. While he was there, he took a bunch of photos and posted them to his travel blog: www.kevintorrestravels.com.
