The Colorado Department of Transportation has partnered with a Boulder-based app company called Tagwhat to begin providing information about the state's 25 Scenic and Historic Byways.
Tagwhat is a location based app that works much like a television in that it has different channels that provide information about a variety of subjects. As people pass by certain locations the information is displayed. CDOT has leased one of these channels in order to give travelers an opportunity to learn more about the areas they pass through.
"What is on the screen is actually channels so you'll see like a food channel, a sports channel but you'll also see a Scenic Byways channel. When you click on our Scenic Byways channel...it will bring up different locations with information. Some of them have historic photos, some of them have video, some have pictures and a lot of information on that site," according to Lenore Bates, Program Manager for Colorado's Scenic and Historic Byways.
By the end of July CDOT hopes to have information available for over 250 sites along the byways. They are working with the Colorado Tourism office to continue adding information from the heritage database to further expand the content that is currently available.
Bates said travelers have shown a lot of interest in being able to access this information via mobile technology which lead to the partnership with Tagwhat.
The app is free to download and available for iPhone through the Apple app store and for Android on Google Play.
