COMPUGIRLS is a three-week technology program for girls in grades 8 through 12. The course combines critical thinking, social-justice issues and hands-on training using digital cameras, camcorders and several types of software.
"It's teaching me that women could have a better opportunity to be involved in things like the media, and we can put ourselves out there in a positive way," said Raell Pryor, a student in COMPUGIRLS.
Recent Advanced Placement data shows significant gender contrasts in computer science and physics - where at least 75 percent of test-takers were boys.
Most of the teachers are master's degree students in the School of Education and Human Development.
COMPUGIRLS is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
