The crash happened around 11:40 p.m. on U.S. Highway 287 at Owl Canyon Road, said Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Nate Reid.

The man, who was alone in the Nissan Pathfinder, apparently lost control on the slippery roadway as he drove north, slid off the right side of the road and down an embankment. The SUV rolled onto its side and then collided with a tree, Reid said.

The man, who has not yet been identified publicly, died on scene, Reid said.

U.S. 287 was closed for several hours as CSP investigated the crash and cleared the wreckage.
