SUMMIT COUNTY - If the snow wasn't getting plowed in Breckenridge Saturday, it was being shaped by amateur snow sculpting artists like Mauricio Manses.

"This is part of the snowflake challenge," Manses said.

He and other sculptors would have already competed in the annual Snowflake Challenge back in December, but organizer Ron Shelton says they didn't have enough snow.

"In December we just didn't have the snow," Shelton said.

Back then the state's snowpack was climbing from a low 21 percent of normal and has since rallied to 75 percent - thanks to a snowy March.

"Thank goodness we got a couple of feet of snow in the last week or so," Shelton said.

The snow has also been great at ski areas like Loveland, where spokesperson John Sellers says March has already brought more than three feet of snow.

"We're already at 36 inches in just the first nine days," Sellers said.

Getting feet worth of snow in a few days had CDOT avalanche mitigation crews out early blasting avalanche chutes near Loveland Pass, which is one way to deal with the piles of powder.

Back in Breckenridge Manses found a different, more delicate concept for the snow.

"The concept for my sculpture is about dreaming and passion. It's a female body. She is beautiful [and] turns into a guitar, which represents when you have a passion in life you are basically part of it," Manses said.
