GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) - A 65-year-old man from Golden has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 70-year-old wife.
District Attorney Peter Weir said Thursday that he also filed two violent crime counts against David Wayne Reathman.
Police doing a welfare check on March 25 found Barbara Reathman's body in the couple's home, but David Reathman was missing. He later turned himself in. He is being held without bond.
According to an arrest affidavit, David Reathman learned he was terminally ill with lung cancer in December. He also told officers he had a gambling problem and had struggled financially for years.
The affidavit says Reathman told police he had contemplated murder-suicide. He allegedly said that after his wife was strangled, he contemplated ways to kill himself.
