Lupo Wolf Solazzo pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted first-degree assault. He is facing 10 to 32 years in prison. He will be sentenced on March 19.
He was facing 28 charges of attempted first-degree murder, 21 counts of felony menacing and three counts of child abuse after the incident.
Steve Davis, a spokesman with the Edgewater Police Department, says officers were called to a home near 20th Avenue and Kendall Street on a report of shots fired around 12:40 a.m. on April 5, 2011.
Before the call could be dispatched, an officer in the area also heard the shots and responded. The officer says he was close enough to hear spent shells hitting the pavement, according to Davis.
"After the couple of shots, he unloaded a clip. Just kept continuing and continuing. He kept unloading and reloading, like he was moving around," James Garcia, a neighbor who lives nearby and heard the shots, said. "We just heard the bullets whizzing by. You can hear them brushing the streets and everything."
"We started hearing noise, shots after shots being fired. I'd say 10 to 15 at a time," Ricardo Lozano, another neighbor, said. "We were kind of panicking."
Davis says three officers eventually approached the house and someone inside opened fire on them. While none of the officers were injured, officers were pinned down by gunfire for about 25 minutes before SWAT teams from Denver, Lakewood, Jefferson County, Wheat Ridge, Golden, Colorado State Patrol and other agencies arrived. Davis says it appears someone was firing a semi-automatic gun. At the height of the crisis, he says someone was firing volleys of one to 11 shots at a time.
As the SWAT teams responded, Edgewater Police sent 911 reverse notification to residents in the area warning them to stay inside the house. The power was also shut off to the area so officers could move without giving away their positions.
"They was like, 'Lock your doors, lock your windows, stay inside, get in the basement if you can,'" Garcia said.
"I was scared," Lozano said. "They're two houses away from my sister's house."
Davis says officers did not fire any shots during the entire incident.
With the assistance of the SWAT teams, officers were able to conclude the shots were coming from the 2000 block of Marshal Street. They moved into two residences in that block and found several people inside.
A handgun was recovered at the scene and was taken into evidence. Police say three small children were also sleeping inside the house at the time of the shooting. Officers say the children were taken into protective custody.
There were no injuries to any police or civilians during the standoff.
