There is a strong gas smell in the area near C-470 and Santa Fe Drive. The reverse notification advised residents to evacuate if they can or close their doors and windows. It also suggested people stay inside if possible.
The gas leak in Jefferson County also resulted evacuation notification for Columbine Hills Elementary School, but the notice was canceled before the school had a chance to evacuate.
All the evacuations were lifted around 11:30 a.m.
It's a high-pressure line, so debris is blowing around due to the leak. Xcel is working to turn off the gas or to cap it. Xcel does not know who all is affected by the gas line issue.
There is a large plume of dust and dirt shooting into the air and can be seen from afar.
The right lane of C-470 westbound between Santa Fe Drive and Wadsworth Boulevard was blocked by the broken gas line for nearly two hours. The closure began at 10:17 a.m. Xcel asked the Colorado Department of Transportation to keep the right lane of westbound C-470 closed while they continued their investigation.
The acceleration/deceleration lane at Platte Canyon Drive will remain closed through the evening as Xcel Energy works to repair the line.
