John Copeland now faces 3rd degree assault. The charge stems from an incident last month in the Stapleton Home Depot parking lot.

Copeland was sitting in his parked car in a handicapped spot when a 66-year-old volunteer specially deputized by Denver Police asked to see his placard.

That volunteer confiscated the placard because he said it was expired. Copeland says he didn't understand who the man was and confronted him.

"I'm an 84-year-old veteran," Copeland said. "A disabled veteran here defending myself. That's all.

Copeland spent four days in jail.
