According to research conducted by the job listing website GlassDoor.com, 60 percent of Facebook users list their employer on their profile page.

That's why the site recently began offering users the opportunity to log in through their Facebook account. When users log in this way, a new feature called "Inside Connections" collects employment data from the users Facebook friends and displays it in the users GlassDoor.com account. The idea is to help jobseekers discover connections to companies through people they already know.

"With Inside Connections, we can help you find an in at a company through the friends that you already have on Facebook. And you'd be surprised at all the different ways that you're connected to different companies," Glassdoor.com Co-founder Tim Besse told 9NEWS. "In my case, that includes friends, family members, an ex-girlfriend, and even some fantasy football buddies."

Besse says research shows that 52 percent of people turn to friends or family first for job recommendations when looking for employment.

"The two most trusted resources for learning about companies and jobs are first your friends and family and second reviews that have been written by employees and GlassDoor.com does both of those," Besse said. "The two least trusted resources when researching companies and jobs are a company's career center website and a company's own recruiters."

Besse says with over 800 million potential Facebook friends worldwide able to provide employment information and recommendations - using social media in job searches is a trend that is only going to grow.
