Mouthguards giving athletes an edge
|
KUSA - Athletes in every sport are always looking for that extra edge. Sometimes the answer is training, other times it's equipment. Sometimes, the answer lies in both. ![]() The Pure Power Mouthguard was recently featured on Monday Night Football and has been talked about by athletes including Shaquille O'Neal, Terrell Owens and Scott McCarron for its performance-enhancing benefits. Athletes using the mouthguard claim it helps their athletic performance, and research at Rutgers University backs up that theory. In a blind crossover study, researchers found the PPM allowed athletes jaws to naturally align in a resting state, which increased oxygen flow and a potential boost for explosive power, balance, range of motion, flexibility and endurance. The process of properly aligning the jaw position is based on the principles of neuromuscular dentistry, which indicates that a "good" bite is achieved when the muscles of the face, jaw and neck are allowed to be at their most efficient, restful state. Doctor Cate Vieregger of Vibrance Comprehensive Dentistry joined Susie Wargin for the latest 6:20 Sidebar to talk about the PPM and use a "pen test" on Susie to demonstrate flexibility and strength. To watch the interview, visit the video player to the upper right of this article. Makers of the PPM claim it can also play a role in concussions. Although the mouthguards cannot prevent concussions, they say the PPM can potentially lessen the severity of concussions sustained. The mouthguards are available for every age and level of athlete in any sport.
