This is the time of year college bound high school students apply for financial aid.

Most financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, so it's important to apply early.

Students and their parents can meet one-on-one with financial aid professionals during College Goal Sunday, February 10, 2013.

In addition to free financial aid assistance, more than $20,000 in scholarships will be given away on College Goal Sunday.

The seventh annual national event will be held at 16 locations statewide from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 pm. in most locations.

Families will receive free professional guidance on ways to pay for college, specifically how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is a crucial step in the college planning process.

The FAFSA must be completed for a student to receive any type of financial aid, including grants, work study, student loans and even many scholarships. Students are encouraged to submit their FAFSA as close to the first of the year to receive as much financial aid as possible.

Families are encouraged to bring their 2012 federal tax records, to ensure they can work through the FAFSA during the time they have with financial aid experts. Spanish translators will also be available at each of the College Goal Sunday sites. In addition to free financial aid assistance, more than $20,000 in scholarships will be given away on College Goal Sunday.
