Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Tarvin Gaines led the way with 12 points and
seven rebounds as the Jacksonville Gamecocks edged the Northern Arizona
Lumberjacks, 50-48, in the consolation round of the Global Sports Classic at
the Thomas & Mack Center.
Darion Rackley went 10-of-17 at the charity stripe to score 10 points for
Jacksonville State (4-2), which will play North Carolina A&T in the final round
on Saturday.
Gabe Rodgers scored a game-high 22 points for Northern Arizona (1-3). DeWayne
Russell added 10 points for the Lumberjacks, who match up with Campbell on
Saturday.
The Gamecocks scored 18 points off of turnovers and made 11-of-15 attempts at
the charity stripe in the first half to take a 31-19 lead into halftime.
Northern Arizona made 43.8 percent of its field goal attempts in the opening
period, but fell behind as it only managed to attempt 16 shots before the
break.
The Lumberjacks fought back after the intermission by converting 10-of-12 at
the free throw line. Jacksonville State shot just 26.1 percent from the field,
including a 0-of-5 mark from beyond the arc over the final 20 minutes.
Northern Arizona took the lead 8:36 remaining when Jordyn Martin drove into the
paint and made a layup. Stallon Saldivar then made it a three-point advantage
with just under seven minutes to play with another layup. Gaines then scored
two put back layups to give JSU a one-point lead. Northern Arizona had the ball
in the closing seconds trailing by two points, but Rackley stripped Rodgers to
seal the deal.
Despite the loss, the Lumberjacks made 45.7 percent of their field goal
attempts and limited JSU to 32.6 percent shooting from the floor.
