Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Preston Medlin poured in a game-high 22 points at
the Utah State Aggies outlasted the Idaho Vandals to earn an 82-75 victory in
a Western Athletic Conference tilt at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Kyisean Reed added 17 points and three blocks for Utah State (13-1, 4-0 WAC)
as it picked up its 12th victory in a row. Marcel Davis chipped in 14 points,
Spencer Butterfield scored 11, and Jarred Shaw recorded a double-double with
12 points and the same number rebounds.
Connor Hill paced Idaho (6-7, 2-1) by netting 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting
from the floor. Stephen Madison chimed in with 14 points for the Vandals, who
suffered their first setback in conference play this season. Kyle Barone
registered a double-double of 13 points and 10 boards, while Mike McChristian
did the same by scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Although the Aggies had a terrible first half performance in which they shot
just 29.7 percent from the field and allowed Idaho to connect on 41.4 percent
of its field goal tries, the contest went into the intermission tied up at 30.
Utah State found its touch after the break as it sank 56.5 percent of its
attempts from the floor while converting 11-of-13 at the charity stripe. The
Vandals kept up by knocking down 15-of-24 from the field including 5-of-10
from 3-point range in the second stanza. The Aggies appeared to be headed for
their first WAC loss of the season as they trailed 69-61 with 3:38 left before
the final buzzer. However, Medlin connected on a 3-pointer with two seconds
left to conclude the 8-0 run Utah State produced down the stretch to force an
extra session.
The Aggies then scored seven unanswered points and created some extra
opportunities with four offensive rebounds in overtime to bury the Vandals'
chances.
The hosts enjoyed a 46-36 edge in the rebounding battle and committed just six
turnovers to Idaho's 11.
