Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - In his first game as the team's interim
head coach, Jim Corrigan led the Old Dominion Monarchs to a 78-66 win over the
Drexel Dragons in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Daskalakis
Athletic Center.
Corrigan has replaced Blaine Taylor, who was fired earlier in the in the week
after 12 seasons as head coach and a program-record 239.
DeShawn Painter and Dimitri Batten each scored 15 points for ODU (3-20, 1-10
CAA), which snapped a lengthy 10-game losing streak. Richard Ross was also
impressive in the triumph with 14 points and six rebounds.
For Drexel (9-14, 5-6), Derrick Thomas led all scorers with 18 points, while
Frantz Massenat netted 17 points. Tavon Allen chipped in 13 points off the
bench, and Dartaye Ruffin added 10 points for the Dragons, who have lost back-
to-back games.
Despite getting outshot from the field in the first half, 50 percent to 34.4
percent, ODU was able to take a 30-26 lead into intermission by shooting 6-
of-13 from 3-point range. Drexel was only 3-of-10 from beyond the arc in the
opening 20 minutes.
The Dragons took a brief one-point lead less than five minutes into the second
half on a pair of Ruffin free throws, but the Monarchs answered with an 11-0
run to pull away.
ODU scored 14 points off of 15 Drexel turnovers.
