Rock Hill, SC (Sports Network) - Joab Jerome led five players in double
figures with 14 points as the Winthrop Eagles downed the Southeastern
Louisiana Lions, 66-52, in a BracketBusters affair at Winthrop Coliseum.
Jerome hit just 1-of-5 from the field but went 12-of-17 from the free-throw
line for Winthrop (12-15). Gideon Gamble added 13 points and Andre Smith,
Steve Johnson and Christian Farmer each tallied 12 points for the Eagles
who had lost four of their last five games.
Dre Evans was the only player for Southeastern Louisiana (10-15) in double
figures with 11 points. The Lions have lost three of their last four.
The first half was tightly contested with Winthrop clinging to a 33-32
lead at the break. The Eagles shot 42.9 percent from the field in the first
20 minutes which was a bit better than the Lions who shot 41.7 percent.
In the second half the Eagles shot just 40.9 percent from the field but
held the Lions to 28.6 percent shooting to pull away for the win.
Winthrop had a 32-26 advantage in rebounds and outscored the Lions 23-14
from the free-throw line.
