KUSA – For the third occasion in four seasons, the Denver University men's lacrosse team was eliminated just two wins away from a national championship.
But don't tell Pioneers head coach Bill Tierney that those seasons weren't successes.
They very much are outstanding years – even if they didn't finish the right way.
DU lost to No. 1 seeded Duke Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Maryland in the semi-finals of the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers made a rally in the second half as they had done so many times this season – scoring three straight goals to close the margin to one – but the Blue Devils also had a run in them. They put DU away 15-12 in the end.
The Pioneers lost to Syracuse last season as well as Virginia in 2011 in the national semifinals.
