Cross Country State Champion recalls her wild finish

Kayla Young remembers her wild state championship victory.

COLORADO SPRINGS--One of the craziest endings to a cross country state meet ever may only be remembered by the people watching and the cameras recording.

That's because the winner has some trouble piecing it all together.

"From the time I got back up, to the finish, I really don't remember that much," Denver North Senior Kayla Young said.

In the 3A girls' state cross country meet, Young was neck-and-neck with Peak to Peak's Quinn McConnell as the two runners sprinted toward the finish line.

"Especially when you're at the last straightaway, it's not even a thought anymore," Young said. "Your only thought is to get to the end."

Young did, but not without some drama.

Both she and McConnell fell on each runner's final push.

But, it was Young that was able to stay on her feet just long enough to end her senior year with a cross country state championship.
