COMMERCE CITY - Call it a perfect ending to a perfect season. Air Academy defeated Centaurus 1-0 in overtime to claim the 2017 boys’ soccer state championship Saturday morning at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The win helped the Kadets finish a perfect 20-0 on the year.
But the road to hoisting the trophy was not so simple. Centaurus caused the Kadets multiple problems throughout the game – including getting a penalty kick in the final two minutes of play and a chance at the win. Cristian Rice sailed it just over the net which meant this game would end tied 0-0 after regulation.
The 4A state title game featured outstanding play from both goalkeepers -- Rodrigo Ruiz for the Warriors, and Thomas Beatty for the Kadets – which is why despite all of the chances during this game, it remained scoreless until overtime.
After countless saves or missed chances, Air Academy was finally rewarded by the head of Ryan Self who buried a corner kick for the golden goal.
The win marked Air Academy’s fourth state championship in school history – the last one coming in 2014.
