COMMERCE CITY - After watching the 3A state championship game go to five dramatic penalty kicks for the win, Broomfield and Boulder figured, they could do better. After all, how could the league rivals top their 5A state title game from 2014?
Just kidding. Who wants to go to a penalty kick showdown with a state title on the line? Talk about one of the most stressful situations in sports. But that's exactly what it boiled down to for the 5A trophy.
The two powerhouses ended regulation notched at a goal apiece thanks to Panthers' Simon Julien and the Eagles' Armando Ocampo. But it soon became evident to everyone at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City -- that the goalies from each team were playing their best.
Shot after shot, they made the stops, and after ending regulation, the two would head to two 15 minute overtime periods. Still no score so that meant -- yes, you already knew -- penalty shots.
It took 14 rounds of penalty kicks before Boulder gained the advantage over their opponent. The 2-1 victory marked the end of a perfect 20-0 record for the Panthers, and gave them their second boys' soccer state championship (the first was in 2012).
