AURORA-- Not even the hottest team in the state could hand Boulder its first loss in 5A soccer.
After squeaking into the playoffs with a 5-9 record, Fossil Ridge began a Cinderella run through the 5A boys' soccer bracket when the Sabercats knocked off No. 3 Cherry Creek in the first round.
A couple of upsets later, and the No. 30 seed Sabercats found themselves in a semifinal matchup against the still undefeated No. 2 Boulder.
Wednesday night, the heavy favorites came out on top, as the Panthers knocked out Fossil Ridge with a 3-1 victory to advance to the state title.
Omar Castruita scored the go-ahead goal for Boulder in the second half, and then added one more for good measure to make it 3-1.
Simon Julian got the Panthers on the board first in the first half, as Boulder took a 1-0 lead into the break.
But, like they had done throughout these playoffs, the Sabercats stayed strong and responded with a goal of their own when Cameron Viola connected on a header goal.
In the end though, the magic wasn't enough to beat the might of the Panthers, who are now 19-0 on the season.
Boulder will play Broomfield this Saturday in the 5A state championship.
