Holy Family boys survive for 3A title

AIR FORCE ACADEMY – Making it a Holy Family sweep, the Tigers' boys basketball team beat Colorado Academy 53-52 on Saturday night to claim the Class 3A championship.

Earlier in the day at the academy, the Holy Family girls beat Pagosa Springs for their sixth state title.

The Tigers boys had a 53-47 lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs scored five in a row to pull within a point. Colorado Academy had a chance to win with the final shot, but Justin Bassey's shot was short. Bassey finished with 22 points, and David Sommers led the Tigers with 24 points.

It was the Holy Family boys' first state title since 1998, and the second time this season the Tigers (25-2) beat the Mustangs (24-3).
