Kent Denver three-peats for 3A soccer title

2016 3A State Soccer extended highlights

COMMERCE CITY - The 2016 3A boys' soccer state title was everything a fan could've asked for. In a thrilling and dramatic finish, Kent Denver defeated Jefferson Academy in penalty shots to claim its third straight state championship.

Despite controlling the first ten minutes of the game, Kent found itself playing from behind. Jefferson Academy's Brandon Leeper scored his first of two goals on the night to give the Jags a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Despite the change in momentum, the Sun Devils rallied behind the efforts of David Felman. With just over ten minutes remaining in the first, Kent's Spencer Thomas was on the receiving end of a perfect through-ball, and was able to dish it to Felman for the one-timer score.

It appeared as though this game would go into halftime tied 1-1, but the Jags wouldn't settle. Less than a minute later, Leeper found the back of the net on a perfectly placed 40-yard free kick. Jefferson Academy led 2-1 at half.

Following the break, Kent Denver came out of the locker room like a new team. With a seemingly new energy, Felman scored his second of the night, and despite great chances on both sides, regulation ended notched at two.

After two scoreless overtime periods where a golden goal would claim the title, the game turned to penalty kicks. Kent goalkeeper Ross Rainaldi was clutch in net, making two crucial stops. That left Mason Saeed -- the fifth and final shooter for Kent Denver -- a chance to clinch the win with his PK, and he didn't let the opportunity pass him by.

The Sun Devils finished a perfect 9-0 in league, and 19-0-1 on the season.
