DENVER-- A simple crossbar was all that separated two of the top 5 teams in the state in boys' 3A soccer.
On a free kick from just outside the box midway through the second half, Miguel Vargas of Jefferson shot a rocket that went over the keeper's head.
Had the ball made contact an inch lower and hit the back of the net, the underdog Saints would have taken a 2-1 lead over the Tigers.
Instead, it smacked off the top of the goal post. And, just a few minutes later, KIPP Denver's Jorge Gurrola scored the go-ahead goal to give the Tigers the 2-1 victory.
One inch was the only difference.
Early on, it looked like KIPP Denver would win comfortably when Jhovani Gonzalez found the back of the net just a few minutes after the opening whistle.
But, Jefferson's Bryan Ascencio evened things up later in the first half when he sneaked one past the KIPP Denver goalie to make it 1-1.
From then on, the teams traded scoring chances back and forth, before Gurrola capitalized on a rebound off his team's corner kick with about 12 minutes to go to seal the victory.
With the win, the Tigers move to 8-0 conference play in the 3A Frontier league.
