Liberty Common wins first soccer title in win over Colorado Academy

3A Boys' Soccer State Championship: Liberty Common vs Colorado Academy

COMMERCE CITY - Entering Saturday's 3A boys' soccer state championship game against Colorado Academy, the Liberty Common Eagles had just won their first ever semifinal game. As it turned out, their year of firsts wasn't over yet. Liberty Common defeated the Mustangs 1-0 to clinch their first soccer title in school history.

That being said, it was no easy task. Colorado Academy -- a four time boys' soccer state champion -- hadn't allowed a goal all tournament. On this day, they let one in less than six minutes into the game. Josh Rohrbaugh's beautiful goal kick sailed the length of the field, and after taking a favorable bounce off of a Colorado Academy defender, landed right at the feet of Ryan Zonnefeld who buried it away.

"It was just a burst of adrenaline, guys," Zonnefeld said. "I saw that ball and I knew it was my chance. I finished it [and] I knew it was game right there because our defense is amazing."

The Eagles had to be. Colorado Academy had 74 minutes to score, and each time, Liberty Common thwarted their efforts. It was enough to hang onto the win and be crowned the new 3A boys's soccer state champions.

Check out the extended video highlights posted above, and tune in to the Sunday morning Prep Rally for more action from the boys' soccer state tournament.
