Local players discuss call up to U.S. Women's National Soccer Team

Local Fossil Ridge juniors Jaelin Howell and Sophie Smith discuss being called up to the United States Women's National Soccer Team in April.

KUSA - Prom is arguably one of the more memorable moments for a high school student. It's not that Fossil Ridge High School juniors Sophie Smith and Jaelin Howell aren't looking forward to the big dance. It's just, they've already topped that experience, at least, for this year.

Earlier this month, Smith and Howell were called up to the United States Women's National Soccer Team -- yes, that's the same one that represents our country in the Olympics. We're talking suiting up with Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd and Mountain Vista graduate, Mallory Pugh -- kind of a big deal.

Howell, 17, and Smith, 16, have quickly risen through the ranks of the United States soccer program, playing with both the U-20 and U-23 teams. After the senior team was hit with a series of injuries, Howell and Smith were called upon to join them for a couple of friendly matches against Russia.

Howell and Smith returned home this week, and sat down with Taylor Temby to talk about their experience in the Saturday morning Prep Rally. Watch the video to hear what they had to say.
