LONGMONT - Longmont quarterback Oakley Dehning led the Trojans to a 30-3 victory over rival Greeley West Thursday night.
The Trojans were able to capitalize on two botched snaps to the opposing punter, and jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter. That included a short rush by Dehning into the end zone (failed two-point conversion), and a safety by the Longmont defense. Dehning would score one more rushing touchdown on the night.
Sophomore Drake Engelking led his team with 102 yards rushing, including a game-high 67 yard run for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Dehning contributed 12 rushes for 49 yards, and senior Kelvin Townsend added 37 yards on 7 carries.
Greeley West senior Darren Delacroix was the bright spot on his team both offensively and defensively, but the Trojan defense was able to stop him from getting into the end zone.
Longmont improves to 1-1 on the season, and will play 3A state runner-up Roosevelt next Friday. Greeley West drops to 1-1. The Spartans will face Fort Collins on Thursday.
