AURORA -- The Rocky Ford Meloneers won their first ever girls state championship defeating the defending 3A softball state champs the Strasburg Indians.
The first two innings, both teams felt out the competition and paid close attention to the pitchers' tendencies. Rocky Ford would tally one run in the first inning and two in the second.
Luckily, the Meloneers struck early and lead 3-0; in the third inning, the pitching tightened up for both Strasburg and Rocky Ford.
The Indians would tally a run in the second inning to make it 3-1; however, the Meloneers called quick to take a 5-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.
Rocky Ford's Whitney Nelson snags a pop fly for the final out and the 3A Softball State Championship for the school's first ever girls state title.
