KUSA - The Saturday morning Prep Rally featured the final week of the regular season for our 3A, 4A and 5A football teams, as well as an explainer how this year's playoff participants will be decided (warning: it involves math -- lots and lots of math). We also watched round two of the soccer playoffs.
The Saturday football games featured two No. 1 ranked teams. First, it was 4A top-ranked Denver South looking to finish the regular season undefeated with a win over Thornton, and 5A No. 1 Pomona versus Cherokee Trail, where a win would make the Panthers undefeated against in-state teams this season. Mountain View and Skyline also battled it out in a high-scoring game, and Fossil Ridge and Horizon took the field in the season finale.
This year, the Colorado High School Activities Association moved to a Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) to determine who will advance to the post-season. Using a formula, the system takes into account a team's winning percentage, that team's opponents' winning percentage, and their opponents' opponents' winning percentage (see, told you it was complex).
Finally, top seed Denver West and Ponderosa took the pitch in the second round of the 4A playoffs, and rivals Broomfield and Legacy in 5A.
Watch the videos to see the Saturday morning Prep Rally, and tune in to the Sunday morning rally for more highlights from football, volleyball regionals, soccer playoffs and state gymnastics.
