Local pitcher to make MLB debut against Rockies

KUSA - Marco Gonzales, a former standout pitcher at Rocky Mountain High School, will make his Major League debut for the St. Louis Cardinals this Wednesday against the Rockies.

"It's really special," said Gonzales. "I'm grateful to represent the organization and my family and my previous school. Really anywhere making my debut is special but obviously my home state is another level."

Gonzales worked his way to the top quickly, after being selected 19th overall in the 2013 MLB Draft, he has a 1.89 ERA in his 13 starts in the minor leagues.

While playing at Rocky Mountain High School, Gonzales won four state championships, helping him land a scholarship to play baseball at Gonzaga. He also grabbed the attention of the Rockies, who drafted him in the 29th round out of high school, before he ultimately decided Gonzaga was the best fit at the time.

"I got to see Marco a little bit in high school. It's a great story," said Rockies Manager Walt Weiss. "I texted his dad and said congratulations and said it's going to be a great day for his family (on Wednesday) being able to do it at home."

At Gonzaga, Gonzales continued to excel, combining for a 19-4 record with a total ERA of 2.09 in his first two seasons.

As a junior, he went 7-3 with a 2.80 ERA, along with being nominated for the Golden Spikes Award for the second consecutive year, which is awarded to the nation's top amateur baseball player.

What was even more impressive, was his ability to swing the stick as well, leading his team with a .311 average, paired with 26 RBIs.

Wednesday's game has a start time of 1:10 p.m.

"I couldn't have written it any better than this," said Gonzales. "This is perfect. It came a lot faster than I thought it was going to come. I believe that I am ready and the organization has made it clear that they believe in me and they're ready as well."
