Truex Jr. wins NASCAR Championship

He won the Ford EcoBoost 400 outright to dominate his three challengers.

KUSA - It's the first professional championship for the state of Colorado in 2017 - and it's all thanks to a guy from New Jersey.

Martin Truex Jr., driving the #78 Bass Pro Shops car, won the NASCAR Cup for Colorado's own Furniture Row Racing team after finishing first in the Ford EcoBoost 400 in Homestead, Florida Sunday afternoon.

Driving a Toyota for Furniture Row, Truex just needed to finish ahead of the three other competitors racing in the championship. Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski were the other racers vying for the title.

Truex took the lead on lap 216 of the 267-lap race.

This is the first championship for the team and Truex. But more than just performing best in the final race, his team has dominated NASCAR this year.

"I don't even know what to say," an emotional Truex said upon emerging from his car to USA Today Sports. "We never gave up all day — don't know how we won that thing. ... I can't believe it. I've thought of this since I was a little kid. Never give up on your dreams, no matter what happens."

Truex and the Furniture Row Racing team have the most wins this season, the most stage wins, led the most laps... the list goes on and on.
