Broncos drop six spots in USA TODAY NFL power rankings

USA TODAY - Coming off an embarrassing 23-10 loss to the Giants (1-5) at home, the Broncos (3-2) dropped six spots in USA TODAY’s NFL power rankings this week. After such a dismal performance, such a ranking may actually be generous.

Denver is now ranked No. 15, a drop from their No. 9 ranking last week. Despite the Broncos’ drop, there are still only five AFC teams ranked higher than them — the Chiefs (No. 1, 5-1), Steelers (No. 3, 4-2), Patriots (No. 5, 4-2), Bills (No. 9, 3-2) and the Texans (No. 12, 3-3).

Here’s USA TODAY’s commentary with Denver’s position:

Key injuries, poor play and falling to a winless team at home after your bye week? Denver’s Sunday night loss about as bad as they come.

If the actual NFL standings sorted out like these power rankings, the Broncos would squeak into the playoffs as the conference’s sixth and final seed. The AFC’s four division winners — Kansas City, Pittsburgh, New England and Houston in these rankings — would be the top four seeds with Buffalo and Denver as Wild Card teams.

The Broncos have 11 more games to improve their spot in NFL power rankings and, more importantly, in actual NFL standings.
