Boulder's Boselli joins Atwater, Mecklenburg, 4 other Broncos among 27 Hall of Fame semifinalists

KUSA - Tony Boselli, who grew up in Boulder and played at Fairview High School, joins six former Denver Bronco players who made the Pro Football Hall of Fame modern-ear cut to 27 semi-finalists, it was announced Tuesday.

Steve Atwater, a hard-hitting safety, and Karl Mecklenburg, a versatile defender who played inside linebacker on running downs and defensive end or outside linebacker on passing downs, headline the Broncos’ Hall candidates.

Other Broncos who made the list of 27 were Ring of Fame safety John Lynch, safety Brian Dawkins, cornerback Ty Law and defensive end Simeon Rice.

Rod Smith, the Broncos’ all-time leading receiver, was perhaps the most overlooked.

Among the 27 semifinalists, only two middle linebackers, Baltimore’s Ray Lewis and Chicago’s Brian Urlacher, are favorites to become first-ballot inductees for the Class of 2018. Receiver Randy Moss is also a first-year eligible candidate while another receiver, Terrell Owens, is a semifinalist for a third time.

Boselli, who played seven seasons for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Lynch and Atwater were top 15 modern-era finalists last season.

The list of 27 will be trimmed to 15 modern-era finalists in January, with no more than five eventually elected into the Hall in a vote taken Feb. 3 in Minneapolis.
