Paxton Lynch scheduled to be No. 2 QB with Siemian inactive

KUSA—Operation Paxton is moving along.

Barring an overnight setback, Paxton Lynch will be the Denver Broncos’ No. 2 quarterback Sunday afternoon when they play the Cincinnati Bengals, multiple league sources told 9NEWS.

The sources added Trevor Siemian, the Broncos’ season-opening starting quarterback and an offensive co-captain, is not scheduled to be active.

Brock Osweiler will be the Broncos’ starting quarterback for a third consecutive game. The depth chart move behind Osweiler is less about Siemian and more about the Broncos wanting to get Lynch ready to play.

Lynch was the Broncos’ first-round pick, No. 26 overall, in the 2016 draft. He played in three games last season, starting two. He played well off the bench for the injured Siemian against the Tampa Bay Bucs, but performed unevenly in his two starts against Atlanta and Jacksonville.

Lynch was beaten out by Siemian during training camp and the preseason for the starting job in 2017. In the second preseason game August 19 against San Francisco, Lynch suffered an injury to his right throwing shoulder that sidelined him for two months.

He returned to practice with limited reps as the No. 3 quarterback for three weeks, before he was elevated to No. 2 in practice this week.

The Broncos are 3-6 and in a five-game losing streak. It’s become evident general manager John Elway and head coach Vance Joseph want to get a more thorough evaluation of Lynch by watching him play before they make decisions on their roster and quarterback situation during the offseason.
