Avs could accomplish preseason goal, clinch playoff spot

Patrick Roy never did not make it to the postseason as a member of the Avalanche – he could extend that streak Thursday night against the Canucks.

With a win and any kind of loss by Phoenix in their matchup with the New Jersey Devils, Colorado will solidify their spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs. It would be their first appearance in the postseason since 2010 and it would be something they set out to do when the season began.

"It would be a big accomplishment," center Matt Duchene said. "That was our goal early in the season, to make the playoffs and challenge for a Stanley Cup. That's step one so it would be great to do it tonight."

After clinching, the Avalanche will simply be vying for seeding in the new playoff format. Roy won't allow his team to think that way though – the Stanley Cup attitude he instituted in the beginning will continue to prevail.

"I don't want us to look at the big picture all the time," he said. "We have been talking all along that we want to be even-keel from the start of the year, and it certainly is not going to change today because we start sniffing the playoffs."
