KUSA – The Avalanche have a new rival. The Red Wings are the "bad guys" of the past, it's now all about St. Louis for Colorado.
The Avalanche beat the Blues 4-0 Saturday for their 50th win of the season. It was also their first time beating the best team in the Western Conference.
The win and the two points were huge for Colorado, but the talk afterwards surrounded the fisticuffs from the third period.
The teams combined to rack up 167 penalty minutes in all, but the play getting the most talk after the game was the "gutless" play Blues Captain David Backes made on Nathan MacKinnon.
Backes dropped the 18-year-old to the ice and then kept on punching even after the rookie was down.
"It shows what kind of leader he is, if you're going to go after an 18-year-old. Gutless in my opinion," Avs coach Patrick Roy said after the game.
Blues Head Coach Ken Hitchcock responded to Roy saying, "he always has something to say after every game, so you guys pick up what he wants. I'm worried about my team and the way we played, OK?"
The Red Wings rivalry was the best-ever, but now booing the Blues is going to be pretty fun as well.
