KUSA - A Boulder man died Monday after falling around 140 feet while hiking on a 14er.
According to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Lackey, 31, and two other hikers were climbing the south side of Mount Princeton in the Chalk Cliffs area around 1 p.m.
Rescue crews responded after other hikers in the area called authorities claiming they saw a man falling down the slope.
According to the sheriff's office, Lackey grabbed a large boulder, dislodging it, which caused him to lose his balance.
He then fell approximately 40 feet to the ground below before tumbling another 100 feet down a rocky slope.
His friends then moved him to flatter ground and awaited for rescue crews.
Attempts to treat and revive Lackey failed, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff's office says Lackey and his hiking companions were climbing on a rock face with no equipment.
