Rapids send three players to U.S. Under-21 camp

The United States Men's National Team does not have a Colorado Rapids' player on its roster, and it is unlikely the USMNT will be selecting a Colorado player to go to Brazil this June.

But that trend could change in the coming years.

On Friday, the Colorado Rapids announced three of their players have been selected to attend U.S. Soccer's Under-21 camp. Shane O'Neill, Dillon Serna, and Marlon Hairston will all head to Carson, CA, following the Rapids' home match against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon. Colorado's three players is the most of any MLS team at the U-21 camp this year.

"This is an exciting opportunity for these three players, and proof that the Rapids philosophy of identifying and developing young talent is on the right track," said Techincal Director Paul Bravo in a statement. "We're building from within with our Homegrown Players like Shane and Dillon, as well as through MLS SuperDraft picks like Marlon, and then getting them significant chances with the first team."

The Under-21 camp is designed to develop players who show the ability to possibly represent the United States on the Under-23 National Team in the coming months and years. These players will create the majority of players selected to represent the United States at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. Many of the players to come through the U-23 team have gone on to player with the USMNT in World Cup competition.

While Hairston and Serna have not consistently been in the Rapids' eighteen-man roster on game days this season, O'Neill has played huge role for the Rapids in 2014. After getting a call-up to the U.S. Men's National Team in January, O'Neill has remained consistent in his run of form with the Rapids by earning a start in every game.

The Rapids will face the San Jose Earthquakes at 4:00pm MT at DSG Park in Commerce City on Saturday, April 19th.
