With eyes on World Cup, Rapids host local celebration

If you can't get to Brazil for the United States' first World Cup match on Monday, downtown Denver might be the next best location.

The Colorado Rapids are hosting the World Soccer Celebration at Skyline Park from now until Monday evening (weather permitting), with the festivities culminating in the U.S. Soccer match against Ghana. Fans can head to this family-friendly event in the heart of downtown Denver (between 17th Street between Arapahoe and Lawrence) for World Cup viewing parties, food vendors, 3-on-3 soccer tournaments, and mini-soccer fields where players from the Rapids will hold daily clinics. Colorado Rapids defender Drew Moor says the World Cup is providing the perfect showcase for Major League Soccer to reach fans that might not be familiar with the sport.

"It's starting to happen more and more," said the Rapids captain. "Especially when the U.S. National Team is in the World Cup, and especially when they are doing well, it puts soccer at the front of this country. It's always a great opportunity to publicize your sport."

The celebration starts each day at 9:00am, with each of the day's games being broadcast on the giant-screen televisions inside the park. For more information, head to: http://www.coloradorapids.com/WorldSoccerCelebration
