KUSA - For just the second time in Division II history, a men's and women's basketball program, from the same school, are ranked top 2 in the nation. Fortunately you don't have to look far to find the school: Metro State.
For the latest Sidebar, Susie Wargin talked to men's head coach Derrick Clark who's team is 12-0 and ranked #1 in Division II for third straight week. Alongside Derrick was women's head coach Tanya Haave who's team is 11-0 on the year and ranked #2.
Both coaches talked about what makes their teams so special right now. Both teams are very tight knit but also support each other. To watch the interview with Coach Clark and Coach Haave, visit the video player above.
Coach Clark was an assistant at Metro State under Mike Dunlap for eight years before spending five years with Jeff Bzdelik at Air Force and CU. He returned to Metro State last season as the head coach and led his team to a 22-8 record. After the 2010-11 regular season, the Roadrunners won their first NCAA Tournament game since 2007.
Coach Haave is a graduate of Evergreen High School who played under Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee. She has many deep coaching roots in her home state. Prior to being head coach at the University of San Francisco, she was an assistant under Ceal Barry at CU and also coached at Regis. Last year Tanya led the Roadrunners to a 30-3 record and a trip to the Elite Eight.
The Roadrunners visit Colorado School of Mines on Friday, January 6th. The women tip off at 6 p.m., the men at 8 p.m. For more information, visit www.gometrostate.com
