FEDERAL HEIGHTS – Residents at the Lodge on 84th apartments in Federal Heights witnessed an emotional rescue Thursday morning.
Firefighters responding to the fire just after 8 a.m. broke down a door to get inside an apartment where smoke appeared to be coming from the chimney.
Through the heavy black smoke, a Labrador retriever emerged. Firefighters say that dog appeared to be in good condition but an older chocolate lab inside did not look so good.
Her "limp" body was removed from the apartment as neighbors who knew the dog looked on.
She was treated with oxygen and therapy designed specifically for animals. After a few tense moments, she began to move.
The dog was wrapped in a blanket and transported to the Huron Animal Hospital where she is currently in the ICU.
"We're very hopeful for a positive outcome," Ernie Rodrigues, Fire Captain of the Federal Heights Fire Department, said. "Her eyes were open. She was breathing on her own, and her tail was wagging."
Fighters are still trying to contact the two men who live in the apartment. Four surrounding units were evacuated during the blaze as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, it may have started in the kitchen.
