KUSA - Founder and director of Longhopes Donkey Rescue Kathy Dean stopped by 9NEWS, along with two children – Elizabeth and Evan Reed who are frequent visitors to the shelter.

They are hoping to find two donkeys, Sasha and Julie, a bonded pair of miniature jennets a new home. They have been together almost their entire nine years of life.

Sasha and Julie have been moved around from three different homes. They lost each home through no fault of their own. But because Longhopes provides a permanent safety net for the donkeys, these miniature donkeys landed safely back at Longhopes after each disappointment. They are now looking for that final, forever home.

Both are very healthy, affectionate and well mannered donkeys. They are great with children and must stay together.

Donkeys are easy to care for with just a few rules. They need to have a burro buddy consisting of another donkey, they need secure shelter with a roof to stay out of rain and snow, they need room to exercise and they need clean water each day that will not freeze. Grass hay is their main diet. A pair of donkeys will eat 104 bales of hay per year which is much less a single horse.

Donkeys also need attention. They want time with humans to be petted, groomed, and have their hooves cleaned. Then every 3 months a professional hoof trimmer must give them a donkey manicure.

Anyone interested in adopting Sasha and Julie can meet them Saturday at an Open House from 1 to 5 p.m. at the facility in Bennett Colorado.

There will be food, refreshments, donkey rides, and a silent auction to help raise money for Longhopes. The event is free but donations are appreciated.
