FORT COLLINS - A Fort Collins animal rescue is looking for a puppy they believe was stolen from a weekend adoption event.
All Aboard Animal Rescue said the puppy, a five-month-old tan and white male Chihuahua named Siberia, was stolen between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pet Club, 2226 E. Harmony Rd, according to a report submitted online Monday to Fort Collins Police Services. All Aboard Animal Rescue provided a copy of the report to the Coloradoan.
FULL STORY: Puppy stolen from adoption event
Rescue staff say a teenager who tried to adopt the puppy took her from the event. According to the report, the 16-year-old girl was denied adoption due to her age and tried to get rescue staff to let a 24-year-old male fill out the paperwork for her. The rescue's policy is that a parent or guardian must apply for a dog with a minor.
The girl then allegedly took her application paperwork to "bring to her mother" and left the event with the dog after telling a volunteer she was going to "get going, because the adoption event was too stressful for her puppy."
All Aboard Animal Rescue Executive Director Ashley Dinger said the rescue does not have the girl's name because she took the paperwork with her. Dinger noticed the puppy was missing after double-checking the rescue's foster base after the adoption event, which showed one dog unaccounted for. All Aboard Animal Rescue does not have a physical shelter and utilizes volunteer foster families to house animals in between weekly adoption events.
Saturday's event was an "Adoptapalooza" featuring 86 adoptable dogs. Dinger said this is the first time a dog has gone missing since the rescue opened five years ago.
"We have guidelines to ensure things like this don't happen, but she removed paperwork that she wasn't supposed to take with her," she said. "It is possible that this was an overall mistake on her end, but due to the situation surrounding it, it appears it was malicious."
According to the report, the girl is around 5'4" with light brown or dirty blonde hair, light features and a medium build.
