A team of city staff and volunteers boxed and labeled toys, words of comfort and other items reflecting sympathy and love left. Families had already taken some memorial items from the sites.

The city says families will still have access to the items at a secured location. Family members will also decide if the white crosses which stood at the memorial site will be delivered to their homes or stored in a warehouse.

The Aurora History Museum will archive all items at the memorial under the supervision of Jennifer Kuehner, the museum's executive director.

Organic items, including wreaths and flowers were mulched and recycled for use in the city parks.

The preserved items may one day become an exhibit at the Aurora History Museum.
